What is a Midwife?
A well accepted international definition says “midwives are qualified health professionals who provide care to healthy women throughout pregnancy, labour and the postpartum period, and to their newborn infants”. They provide counseling and teaching, as well as monitoring the health of mother and baby. Midwives provide care in the community, at home, clinics and in hospitals.
“I was very happy with the care that you gave me during and after my pregnancy. I was always well informed as to what was going on with me and the baby, as well as the measures you were taking to keep me and the baby safe. I don’t regret having a midwife, and will certainly be contacting you when I am pregnant again. Thank you for everything you did for us, and making my labour, birth, and pregnancy a memorable one.”
Karen
All women, regardless of socio-economic circumstances, have a right to accessible, comprehensive midwifery care and can self-refer themselves to the midwife. B.C. care card or B.C. Medical Service Plan covers the midwifery care.
