Your one-stop care

Flexible appointments

Midwifery visits are much longer than visits with doctors. Most visits in the first part of pregnancy are scheduled every three to six weeks and last between 30-60 minutes. In the third trimester visits are scheduled more frequently and are often every week during the last month of pregnancy.

After your baby is born, visits usually take place wherever the new family resides. This will happen in the hospital after a hospital birth and at home. We do frequent home visits to ensure the feeding, growth and health of the mom and baby. After the first two weeks, visits are scheduled in the clinic and continue for about six weeks when your care is transferred back to your family doctor.

Who is a Midwife

In British Columbia a midwife is a registered health care professional who provides primary care to low-risk women throughout pregnancy, labour and birth.  Midwives also provide care to both mother and baby during the six weeks following birth. They are available to clients 24 hours a day, seven days a week by pager.

Midwifery Care

The Medical Services Plan will cover one primary care provider for mom and baby, for the duration of pregnancy, throughout labour and birth, and for the first two months postpartum. The choice of caregiver for a normal, healthy pregnancy is each woman’s decision to make and will either be a midwife, a family physician, and in some areas of BC, an obstetrician. Midwives are experts in healthy pregnancy, normal births and well babies. We will consult with specialists should the need arise. After six weeks postpartum, the care of both mom and baby is transferred back to their family physician who will resume ongoing medical care.
