Oral probiotic supplementation in pregnancy to reduce Groupd B Streptococcus Colonization (The OPSiP Study)
Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is a type of bacteria that is often found in parts of the body including the vagina. If GBS passed to the baby during labour and delivery, it can make them very ill. This is why pregnant individuals are offered a routine test, usually between 35-37 weeks of pregnancy, to find out if they have GBS or not. If they do have GBS, it is recommended to receive intravenous (IV) antibiotics in their labour to reduce the risk of their baby getting ill from a GBS infection.
Probiotics are live bacteria that when taken in adequate amounts may be beneficial to one’s health. GBS infection of newborns is a serious illness. This study will investigate whether taking probiotics in pregnancy will prevent GBS colonization.
